Recently, at a conference where I was the AI Keynote Speaker, a college professor expressed concern that when assigning her students, a paper, they could now just use AI to produce the results. “It’s cheating,” she said with evident frustration in her voice. That sparked a conversation that created a paradigm shift.
“Instead of assuming that researching a topic and then writing a paper to prove their learning and research, what if you allowed them to embrace AI and let it (AI) do the research for them?” “Well, how do I know they’ve learned anything?” She had a valid question. “Then what if, upon receipt of their papers, you asked them to identify five specific learnings they gained from writing the paper, and be specific? You see if the student just had AI write the paper thinking that ‘the paper’ was the desired outcome – and then the test was what you learned…those who paid no attention to what they turned in will have no response. They get an F! But those who read their paper and got their mind expanded beyond what they might have just stumbled across on a Google search or at the library – those students have learned experientially.”
